statement of purpose

My current body of work, which I began during a recent month-long residency in South Africa, deals with giving a voice to elements of the human psyche which may normally remain private. The elements I am interested in are those which feel dangerous, "sinful", and taboo. I use both text and confrontational imagery to achieve this concept, repeating words or images to a degree which gives them a sense of urgency.

My work is based conceptually and aesthetically on the principle of repetition and reproduction. Through repetition of certain words, and the proximity of these words to each other, I want the viewer to be drawn into a dialogue, in part private but at the same time exposed, protected yet provocatively dangerous, acceptably sexual yet taboo.
